Dear Edition includes an AI assistant, Dee, and other features that use artificial intelligence ("AI Features"). These AI Terms explain what they do, what information they use, and what we expect from you. They are part of our Terms of Service; capitalised words have the meanings given there.
1. You are talking to an AI
Dee is an AI system, not a person. Dee tells you it is an AI assistant when you first start talking with it, and a notice under its first message names the AI providers that produce its replies. If you ask whether you are talking to a person, Dee will tell you it is an AI. Its answers are produced automatically by AI models. Our team does not read your conversations with Dee as they happen.
2. What our AI Features do
Depending on what is available to you, AI Features can:
- talk with you about who your Magazine is for and what it celebrates, and ask you questions to help you tell your story;
- write, rewrite or shorten texts for your pages, headlines and gift notes, based on what you tell it;
- suggest a design and the number of pages, and decorate pages with stickers from our library;
- fill a whole Magazine for you from your photos and your answers ("build it for me"), or go through it with you page by page;
- create puzzles, such as crosswords and word searches, from words you give it;
- turn your voice into text when you use the microphone button.
How it works: the AI writes words and chooses from options we give it (for example a design or a sticker). The Service itself places your photos and lays out the page, and every change appears as a step you can undo.
What our AI Features do not do. They do not generate images, do not analyse or describe your photos, and do not recognise faces. (An AI assistant app of your own that you connect may look at small previews of your photos if you say yes: section 11.2.) "Cut-out" (background removal) uses a model that runs entirely on your own device and sends nothing to anyone.
3. What information is sent, and to whom
3.1 Text only. When you use an AI Feature, we send our AI provider what it needs to answer: your message, the text of your Magazine and its page structure, and the notes the assistant keeps about your Magazine (for example the facts you told it). We do not send your photos. We send a pseudonymous identifier for safety purposes instead of your name or e-mail address. (An AI assistant app of your own that you connect to Dear Edition is not one of our AI providers; what it receives is explained in section 11.)
3.2 Voice. When you use voice input, the recording is sent to our speech-to-text provider, converted into text, and not stored by us.
3.3 Safety filter. Messages you send to Dee may pass through an automated safety filter run by one of our AI providers. If a message is flagged, Dee may not answer it.
3.4 Our AI providers. We currently use AI models from Anthropic and OpenAI, both based in the United States. OpenAI also provides speech-to-text and the safety filter. We may change providers; when we do, we will update this document and our Privacy Policy. How transfers of information to the United States work is explained in section 9 of the Privacy Policy.
3.5 Nothing is sent unless you use AI. Opening the editor, choosing a design by hand or tapping a ready-made answer button does not send anything to an AI provider. Information is sent only when you send Dee a message, use voice input, or ask Dee to write, build, decorate or create something.
4. No training on your content
We do not use your photos, texts, messages or Magazines to train AI models, and our contracts with our AI providers do not allow them to use the information we send them to train their models.
5. How long information is kept
- Your conversation with Dee is stored on your own device (up to your last 60 messages), not on our servers. Clearing your browser data deletes it.
- Notes the assistant keeps about your Magazine — such as who it is for and the facts you shared — are saved with that Magazine so Dee can continue where you left off. They are deleted when you delete the Magazine.
- Texts Dee writes into your Magazine are part of your Magazine, like texts you write yourself.
- Usage counters. We keep counts of how many AI requests you have made (numbers only, not what you wrote) to apply fair-use limits.
- Our AI providers keep the information we send them only as their terms allow: under their current terms, generally no longer than 30 days, unless longer retention is needed to investigate misuse of their services or is required by law.
- Your yes to small photo previews (section 11.2) is kept with that Magazine and deleted with it. We do not keep the preview picture itself.
- What a connected app has received (section 11) is kept by the app's provider as its terms and your settings with it say, not by us; we cannot delete it for you.
- Layouts we learn from (section 11.4) are kept until we remove them; a published layout contains nothing of yours.
6. Check everything before you order
AI can be wrong. It may misunderstand you, get a name, a date or a fact wrong, invent details, or write something that does not sound like you. You are responsible for reading and checking every text before you order, especially names, dates, places and anything about health, money or the law. Once you order, your Magazine is printed exactly as you approved it, and errors in AI-written text that you could have spotted are not print defects.
AI Output is not professional advice of any kind.
7. Who owns AI Output
As between you and us, the texts that AI Features write for your Magazine belong to you, to the extent the law allows, and we do not claim any rights in them beyond the licence in our User Content and Intellectual Property Policy. Please note:
- in some countries, text generated by AI without enough human creative input may not be protected by copyright;
- AI may produce similar texts for other users, and you do not get exclusive rights to text that is not original to you.
8. Acceptable use of AI Features
You must not use AI Features to:
- create content that breaks section 10 of the Terms of Service — for example sexual content involving minors, harassment, hate, threats or content that infringes other people's rights;
- create content that deceives people about who wrote it in a harmful way, or impersonates a real person to mislead others;
- write content designed to look like an official document or to defraud someone;
- try to make Dee ignore its instructions, reveal its instructions, or behave in a way it is not designed to (for example "jailbreaking" or prompt injection);
- extract our prompts, templates or system information, or use AI Features to build a competing service;
- send large volumes of automated requests or get around fair-use limits.
We may limit or suspend AI Features for anyone who breaks these rules. Our AI providers' usage policies also apply to the content sent to them.
9. Fair-use limits
AI Features have daily limits, which are lower for guests than for signed-in customers, and a short pause may apply after a limit is reached. We set these limits to keep the Service fast and affordable for everyone and may change them.
10. Using Dear Edition without AI
AI Features are optional. You can create, edit and order a Magazine entirely by hand in the editor, without sending anything to an AI provider. Some screens show Dee by default; if you prefer not to use it, switch to the editor and do not send Dee messages or use the voice button.
11. Connecting an AI assistant app of your own
Where we offer it, you can connect Dear Edition to an AI assistant app that you use and that can add a connector to Dear Edition, for example Claude (Anthropic), ChatGPT (OpenAI), Gemini (Google), Perplexity (Perplexity AI), Grok (xAI), Muse (Meta) or Le Chat (Mistral AI). Mistral AI is based in France; the others are based in the United States. Which app you connect is your choice. The app is yours: you use it under your own agreement and account with its provider, and its provider is not one of our AI providers (section 3.4).
11.1 What the connection allows. When you approve the connection:
- that app can create and edit your Magazines, add photos you give it, show previews of your pages and start a checkout for you, within the permissions you approved;
- information you share in the app, and the page previews (which show your photos) and texts it receives from us at your request, are handled by the app's provider under your own agreement with them, not under these AI Terms (section 11.5);
- the app may add pictures to your Magazine that it generated; you are responsible for them like any other Content.
11.2 Small previews of your photos, only if you say yes. The app can also ask us for one picture that holds up to 24 of your photos, each shown small (about 256 pixels wide) with a short label such as "F01" under it, so that it can help you choose a cover, the best shots or an order. We give it this picture only when the app tells us that you said yes in the chat. The app is meant to ask you once for each Magazine (for example: "Shall I look at your photos to pick the best ones? I'd see small previews."), and we keep your yes with that Magazine so that you are not asked again. We cannot see your chat, so we rely on the app to ask you and to pass on your answer. We make the picture when the app asks and send it to the app; we do not keep it. It carries no location or camera details, and we do not analyse the photos ourselves (we do not recognise faces). What the app's model does with the picture is for the app and its provider (section 11.5). Without your yes, the app sees your photos only inside the page previews it asks for.
11.3 What friends sent through a contribution link. If you make a contribution link for a Magazine ("Make it together"), you can ask the app to create the link for you and, later, to read what came in. When it reads, the app receives from us, for each contributor, the name they gave (or "anonymous"), their note and their answers to your prompts, and how many photos they sent. We send it no device or location details. If you ask the app to use the photos, we copy them into your own photo library, where they are handled like your other photos (including section 11.2). Contributors are told on the contribution page that the person making the Magazine may let an AI assistant app read what they send. You are responsible for what you ask the app to do with your friends' contributions; please do not ask it to do more with them than the people who sent them would expect (see section 2.6 of the Community and Collaboration Terms).
11.4 Layouts we learn from. A page that a connected app designs for your Magazine is yours and goes into your Magazine without anyone at Dear Edition approving it. We may also learn from such pages which page arrangements work well, so that we can suggest them to other customers. For this, our software looks at a page that an app designed (and, for an Order, at the fixed copy of the Magazine that we keep for it) and notes its arrangement. A layout is put forward for our review only if an app designed it for at least three different Accounts and it scored well on our automatic quality check, or if a page an app designed was kept through to an Order with little changed by hand and scored well.
- What we keep is the arrangement alone: how many photo frames there are; the kinds of parts on the page (such as headline, text, caption, shapes and lines), their sizes, shapes, tilt and alignment; how they sit in relation to each other; the mood of the page; the nearest colour of the design kit in place of any colour you chose; and, for each text, only a rough length (rounded up to ten characters).
- What we do not keep: none of your photos, none of your words or names, no stickers, and no photo or Account identifiers.
- Counting. To avoid counting the same Account or Order twice, we keep with each layout a short list of one-way codes made from Account identifiers and Order identifiers (not the identifiers themselves). We use them only for counting.
- Review. Before a layout is offered to anyone, a member of our team looks at it drawn with sample words and empty photo frames, never with your content, and decides whether to publish it. Only layouts we have published are offered to other customers, in the design suggestions our Service makes (today in connected apps; they may also appear in our own design tools).
- Afterwards. A published layout contains nothing of yours, so it stays if you later delete your Magazine or your Account; the counting codes are kept with it.
We do this because it is in our interest, and in our customers' interest, to improve our design suggestions. If you do not want your pages used this way, write to info@dearedition.com and we will stop using them for it.
11.5 What the app's provider does. Whatever a connected app receives, including page previews, small photo previews, your friends' names and notes, and anything you tell it, is handled by its provider (for example Anthropic for Claude, OpenAI for ChatGPT, Google for Gemini, Perplexity AI for Perplexity, xAI for Grok, Meta for Muse, Mistral AI for Le Chat) under your agreement and settings with them, not under these AI Terms or under our contracts with our own AI providers (section 4). Whether they keep it, for how long and whether it may be used to improve their models depends on their terms and on the choices you made in your account with them; we cannot see or control that. Please check them before you let an app see photos of other people or your friends' notes. We cannot take back from an app what it has already received.
11.6 Stopping. You can see every app you have connected, and when it last used the connection, under Account settings > Connected apps, and disconnect it there at any time. Disconnecting ends the app's access to your Magazines at once: after that it can no longer ask us for page previews, photo previews or contributions. You can also disconnect from within the app, or ask us to by writing to info@dearedition.com. Your yes to photo previews stays with the Magazine, so the way to stop an app that is still connected from looking is to disconnect it, or to tell it in the chat not to look. Anything an app has already received stays with its provider; delete the conversation in the app if you want it gone, as its provider allows.
11.7 Orders. Orders started from a connected app are made with Dear Edition, on our checkout, under our Terms.
12. Transparency
We tell you when you are interacting with AI. Where the law requires content generated with AI to be marked or labelled, we will do so. You decide what goes into your Magazine; if you share pages publicly, consider telling readers that parts were written with AI assistance where that matters.
13. Changes
We may add, change or remove AI Features and update these AI Terms as described in section 14 of the Terms of Service.
