Many Magazines are made together. These terms explain how our sharing features work, who can see what, and what each person is responsible for. They are part of our Terms of Service; capitalised words have the meanings given there. How we handle personal information in these features is explained in our Privacy Policy.
Who is who in these terms:
- the Maker is the Account holder who creates the Magazine and shares a link;
- a Contributor is someone who adds notes, photos or answers through a contribution link;
- the Recipient is the person the Magazine is for;
- an Event Guest is someone who posts to an event through a table card or link;
- a Viewer is anyone who opens a shared page with its link or code.
Some features below may not be available in every country or to every Account. Where a feature is not shown to you in the Service, these terms do not yet apply to you for that feature.
1. Rules for everyone
- Only share what you have the right to share, and respect the people in your photos and stories (see the User Content and Intellectual Property Policy).
- Follow the content rules in section 10 of the Terms of Service.
- Links and codes are keys. Anyone who has a contribution link, a surprise link, an event card or a Living Page code can use it. Share them only with the people you intend, and close or replace a link if it reaches the wrong person.
- If something on a shared page should not be there, use the Report content link on that page (see section 9 of the User Content and Intellectual Property Policy).
2. Contribution links ("Make it together")
2.1 How they work. A Maker can create a link that lets friends add a page to a Magazine — a note, photos, answers to prompts the Maker sets ("memory hunt"), or a vote for the cover. Contributors do not need an Account. Each link has a last day (14 days unless the Maker chooses another, and never more than 60 days), and the Maker can close or replace it at any time. We do not e-mail invitations: the Maker shares the link themselves.
2.2 What Contributors see. A Contributor sees the Magazine's title, how many people have added something, the link's last day, and whatever they themselves have sent. In a cover vote they see the options and their own vote. They do not see other Contributors' notes or photos, or the Maker's Account details.
2.3 What the Maker sees. The Maker sees each contribution with the name the Contributor chose to give (or "Anonymous"), and for votes, only the totals — never who voted for which option.
2.4 What happens to contributions. A contribution goes only to the Maker. If the Maker uses an AI assistant app connected to Dear Edition (such as Claude or ChatGPT), the Maker can ask that app to read what came in: it then receives your name (or "anonymous"), your note and answers, and how many photos you sent, but no device or location details. If the Maker asks the app to use your photos, they are copied into the Maker's own photo library, and the app can then see small previews of them if the Maker says yes. What the app and its provider do with that is governed by the Maker's agreement with them (see section 11 of the AI Terms). If the Maker chooses, it can be placed in the printed Magazine, or a note can be shown to the Recipient on a surprise opening page, with the name the Contributor gave or as "Anonymous". We remove location and device details from photos sent through a contribution link. Contributions are kept until the Maker deletes them or deletes the Magazine.
2.5 For Contributors. By sending a contribution, you agree to these terms and to the Terms of Service as they apply to Contributors. You confirm that you have the right to send what you send and, where needed, the permission of the people in your photos. You give the Maker permission to use your contribution in their Magazine and its shared pages, and you give us the licence described in the User Content and Intellectual Property Policy to process, print and deliver it. While the link is open, you can change or remove your contribution on the same device; after that, write to info@dearedition.com and we will help. If you are under 18, please ask a parent or guardian before you contribute; children under 13 must contribute only with a parent or guardian.
2.6 For Makers. You are responsible for whom you send your link to, for what you choose to include in your Magazine, and for honouring a Contributor's request to remove their contribution. Please do not include a contribution in a way the Contributor would not expect, and do not ask an AI assistant app to do more with a contribution than its Contributor would expect.
3. Surprise opening
3.1 A Maker can prepare a surprise opening page for the Recipient: a sealed page with the Maker's name, a line of text, the Contributors' notes the Maker chooses and the cover of the Magazine. Before the chosen time, the page shows only the name, the line and a countdown; at the chosen time it opens.
3.2 We do not send the link to anyone and do not notify anyone when it opens: the Maker shares the link. Anyone with the link can open the page.
3.3 Closing the page — or replacing its link, or deleting the Magazine — removes its contents at once. A page that is not closed stays available for a year after it opened. The remaining record is deleted about a month after the page closes or expires.
4. Memory box
A Maker can collect friends' notes and photos into a private memory box, through a link or code. Memories are visible only to the Maker and are kept until the Maker deletes them. A photo the Maker moves from the memory box into their photo library is a separate copy and stays when the memory is deleted.
5. Group magazines
A Maker can turn a contribution link into a group project: everyone adds photos and notes, answers prompts, or each tells their side of the same story, and the group can vote on the cover. Votes are secret: the Maker sees only the totals. A vote is deleted when the vote ends, a new vote starts or the link closes. The Maker decides what goes in the Magazine and can place contributions on a shared spread with each Contributor's chosen name.
6. Living Pages (QR codes)
6.1 Where this feature is available, a Maker can print a QR code in a Magazine that opens a page we host, holding a voice message (up to three minutes), a link to a playlist on a supported music service, or a secret note, with a short line of text.
6.2 Anyone who scans the code or has its link can open the page — there is no password. Do not put anything on a Living Page that you would not want a finder of the printed Magazine to hear or read.
6.3 The Maker can change what the code opens at any time (the printed code keeps working) or close it; closing deletes the voice message and the text. A small record that the page was closed is kept for about 400 days so that the code can say it has been closed.
6.4 We will keep Living Pages available for as long as we offer the feature. If we ever need to stop the feature, we will tell Makers in advance by e-mail. While the feature is paused, codes show a message asking the Viewer to try again later.
6.5 The Maker is responsible for the voice message and the text, and must have the right to share them. Playlist links open the music service under its own terms.
7. Events and live walls
7.1 Where this feature is available, an Account holder or a company can create an event. Event Guests scan a table card or open a link and send photos and notes, without an Account. The organiser can approve posts before they appear, hide posts, and show approved posts on a live wall — a screen at the venue that shows the latest approved posts.
7.2 For organisers. You are responsible for telling your guests, before they post, that their photos and notes go to you, may appear on the live wall and may be used in a Magazine; for approving what is shown; and for removing posts on request. You can delete the event's posts at any time.
7.3 For Event Guests. By posting, you agree to these terms and confirm that you have the right to share what you post and the permission of the people in your photos. Your posts go to the organiser and, if they approve them, appear on the live wall and may be used in a Magazine. To have a post removed, ask the organiser or write to info@dearedition.com.
7.4 Event Guests' posts are kept until the organiser deletes them or deletes the event.
8. Business accounts
Companies can use our corporate features — a company panel, members, employees' personal pages, company events and projects — under a separate business agreement. The company is responsible for informing its employees and for having a lawful basis to share their information with us.
9. The Community
9.1 What it is. The Community is a public gallery where customers can publish the designs of their Magazines as Community Templates, and other customers can browse, like, follow creators and copy designs into their own Magazines.
9.2 Publishing. Publishing is optional. Before a design is published, your photos are removed and your texts are replaced with sample text, and a member of our team reviews it. The licence you give us and other users, and how to take a design back, are explained in section 5 of the User Content and Intellectual Property Policy. You can have up to five designs waiting for review at a time.
9.3 Your Community name. Designs are shown under the Community name (handle) you choose. Your handle must not impersonate anyone, include offensive words, or reveal personal information about others. We may ask you to change a handle that breaks these rules.
9.4 Likes, follows and featured creators. Other users can see how many likes your designs have, and follow you. We may feature designs or creators — for example as "editors of the month" — at our discretion. We do not pay for, buy or sell likes or follows.
9.5 Reports and moderation. Anyone can report a design with the Report button or the Report content link on its page. A design that receives several reports is hidden automatically until a member of our team reviews it; one reported as an intimate image shared without consent is hidden at once. We may remove designs or restrict a handle that breaks our rules, and we will tell you why and how to challenge our decision, as described in section 9 of the User Content and Intellectual Property Policy.
10. Reviews
After delivery, you can write a review with stars, a sentence and up to three photos. You choose whether it may appear on our website and whether your name is shown; both choices are off until you switch them on. Our team checks reviews before they appear. See section 6 of the User Content and Intellectual Property Policy.
11. Removing people and content
- Makers can close or replace a contribution link, delete individual contributions, close a surprise page or a Living Page, delete an event's posts, and unpublish a Community design at any time.
- Contributors and Event Guests can remove their own contribution while the link is open, or ask the Maker or us at any time.
- Anyone who appears in a shared page or a Magazine and wants something removed can write to info@dearedition.com. We will look into the request and, where appropriate, ask the Maker to remove it or remove it ourselves.
Deleting a Magazine deletes its contribution links, the Contributors' notes and photos, and closes its surprise and Living Pages. It does not change a Magazine that has already been ordered or printed.
