This policy explains the cookies and similar technologies Dear Edition uses on dearedition.com and in the editor at editor.dearedition.com, and the choices you have. It is part of our Privacy Policy.
In short: we use what the Service needs to work and to remember the choices you make. Only if you agree, we also use Google Analytics to understand how our website is used. Separately, our website provider Cloudflare measures page views and page-loading speed with a small script that sets no cookies and stores nothing on your device (section 3.3). When our website provider's security checks act, it may also set a strictly necessary security cookie. We do not use advertising or social-media cookies, and we do not track you across other websites.
1. What cookies and similar technologies are
A cookie is a small text file a website stores in your browser. Websites can also keep information in your browser's local storage, session storage and IndexedDB (a small database in the browser), and can install a service worker that lets the site open faster or offline. In this policy, "cookies" means all of these.
Some cookies are strictly necessary: the Service cannot work without them. Others remember your preferences. Others are used for analytics (measuring how people use a site) or marketing (advertising and tracking). The law requires us to ask for your consent before using cookies that are not strictly necessary, unless an exception applies.

Our own cookies are first-party: they are set by dearedition.com or editor.dearedition.com and read only by us. Our language and delivery-country cookies are shared between dearedition.com and editor.dearedition.com, so you make each choice only once. The Google Analytics cookies (section 3.1) are set on our domain by Google's script, and only after you agree. The security cookies in section 3.2 are set on dearedition.com by Cloudflare on our behalf, only when its security features act. Cloudflare Web Analytics (section 3.3) sets no cookie at all.

3.1 Cookies that need your consent: Google Analytics

We set these only after you choose Accept all, or switch Analytics on in Settings, in our cookie banner. Necessary only is as easy as accepting, and the Service works the same if you refuse. If you withdraw your consent, Google Analytics stops and we delete these cookies from your browser.
What Google Analytics measures. Which of our pages are visited (the page address without anything after "?" or "#", and with order and Magazine identifiers removed), from which website a visitor arrived, the type of device and browser, the approximate region Google works out from the connection, and these steps: a vibe viewed or chosen, a Magazine created, checkout started, an Order placed and paid (with its amount, currency and number of pages), an Account created, and joining the waiting list. It never receives your name, e-mail address, delivery address, photos, the title or text of your Magazine, or anything you type. We do not use Google Analytics for advertising: advertising features, Google signals and ad personalisation are switched off, and Google's consent settings for advertising storage and ad personalisation are always set to "denied".
Who receives it, where, and for how long. Google Analytics is provided by Google (Google Ireland Limited for visitors in the EEA and the UK; Google LLC elsewhere), which processes this information on our behalf; it is stored and may be accessed in the United States and other countries where Google operates. We keep Google Analytics data for 14 months, after which Google deletes it. See the Privacy Policy for the legal basis and the safeguards for transfers.
3.2 Security cookies of our website provider (Cloudflare)
Our website dearedition.com (and www.dearedition.com) is served through Cloudflare, Inc., which protects it against attacks and abusive automated traffic and delivers it faster (see the Privacy Policy, sections 8 and 9). Only when Cloudflare's security features act (for example when a request is checked to tell a person from an automated program, or when a request is challenged), Cloudflare may set one of the cookies below on dearedition.com. Cloudflare describes all of them as strictly necessary. You may see none of them.

They are needed to keep the website secure and available, so they do not need your consent and are not covered by the cookie banner's choices. We do not use them for advertising, analytics or to follow you across websites. If you block them, a security check may not complete and some pages may not open. 3.3 Cloudflare Web Analytics (no cookies)
Pages of dearedition.com and www.dearedition.com that Cloudflare delivers contain a small measurement script, added by Cloudflare as the page is delivered and loaded from static.cloudflareinsights.com. It reports the page you opened, the website you came from, your browser, operating system and device type, your country (worked out from your IP address as the request arrives) and page-loading timings, including the Core Web Vitals, so that we can see which pages are used and where they are slow. Cloudflare states that Web Analytics "does not use any client-side state, such as cookies or localStorage, to collect usage metrics", that it does not fingerprint individuals through their IP address, User Agent string or other data, and that it does not track individual end users across its customers' websites. For that reason it sets no cookie and writes nothing to your browser's storage, and it is not listed in the tables above.
Why it is not part of the cookie banner. The banner asks for your consent to things that store information on your device or read it, and that we do not need to provide the website. This script stores nothing on your device and reads nothing from it beyond the timings your browser makes available about the page load, so we have not made it depend on the banner. We have chosen this on the basis of Cloudflare's description of the tool; whether the law in each country treats such a script as needing consent is a question we have asked our legal advisers to confirm, and we will change this if they tell us otherwise. Because it does not depend on the banner, it also does not stop when you choose Necessary only or when your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal. You can stop it with a content blocker in your browser (Cloudflare notes that such blockers stop it), and you can object to it by writing to us (see the Privacy Policy, section 12).
Cloudflare processes this information on our behalf. It keeps the detailed data for about 7 days, after which it keeps only a reduced sample, and shows us roughly the previous six months (Cloudflare's current documentation; these periods are set by Cloudflare). 3.4 Error diagnostics (Sentry; no cookies, no storage)
When something breaks in the website, a short technical error report is sent to Sentry, our error-diagnostics service (Functional Software, Inc.; the reports are stored in the European Union). The part of Sentry that runs in your browser is loaded only after the page has finished loading, or when an error happens. It sets no cookies and uses neither local storage nor session storage on your device, it does not record your screen, and it sends reports through our own web address rather than directly to Sentry. It is therefore not part of the cookie banner's choices. See the Privacy Policy for what a report contains, the legal basis and the safeguards for transfers.
4. Storage in your browser
These items stay in your browser. Most are never sent to our servers; where something is sent (for example your sign-in session), it is only to provide the feature you are using.

None of these items is used to identify you on other websites. Apart from photos waiting to upload and the working copy of your Magazine, they do not contain your photos.
5. Other companies' cookies
- Signing in with Google. If you choose to sign in with Google, a Google sign-in window opens on Google's own website, where Google uses its own cookies under Google's privacy policy.
- Paying by card. The card form on our payment page is provided by our payment provider, PayTR, and loaded from its website. It may use its own cookies or similar technologies to process and secure your payment, under its own policies.
- Cloudflare. Only when its security checks act on a request to dearedition.com: the security cookies in section 3.2, set on our domain. Its Web Analytics script (section 3.3) is loaded from static.cloudflareinsights.com and sets no cookie.
- Google Analytics. Only if you allow analytics: our pages load Google's measurement script from googletagmanager.com, which sends the information described in section 3.1 to Google.
- Links to other websites (for example a playlist on a music service) take you to sites with their own cookie policies.
We do not embed advertising, social-media buttons or videos that set third-party cookies on our pages.
6. Your choices
Our cookie banner. When you first visit our website, we ask whether you agree to analytics cookies, in every country. Nothing in that category runs until you agree. You can choose Accept all, Necessary only, or Settings to choose by category, and change your mind at any time with the Cookie settings link at the bottom of every page. We keep your choice for 12 months and then ask again. The strictly necessary security cookies in section 3.2 are not part of those choices, because the website cannot be kept secure without them. We do not use marketing cookies; if we ever do, we will ask first.
Your browser. You can delete or block cookies and site data in your browser settings. If you block strictly necessary storage, you will not be able to sign in, save your work or place an Order. If you clear your browser data, unsaved work in the editor and your conversation with the assistant on that device will be lost, and preferences such as your language will be reset; Magazines saved to your Account are not affected.
Global Privacy Control and Do Not Track. We do not track you across websites. If your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal, we treat it as a no to Google Analytics, which does not run whatever you chose in the banner. The cookie-free Cloudflare Web Analytics measurement in section 3.3 is not switched off by that signal.
7. Changes
We will update this policy whenever we change the cookies we use, and change the date at the top. If we add another cookie that needs your consent, we will ask before using it.
