How Many Pages and Photos Does a Personalized Magazine Need?
Personalized magazines come in fixed page counts, from 16 up to 52 pages, going up in steps of 4: 16, 20, 24, 28, 32, 36, 40, 44, 48, & 52. As a rule of thumb, plan one to three photos per page and a short text on every second page. This is advice to help you plan, not a guarantee of any result.
How do you choose a page count?
Page counts move in fixed steps. The options you can order are 16, 20, 24, 28, 32, 36, 40, 44, 48, & 52, so the smallest magazine has 16 pages and the largest has 52.
To narrow it down, ask yourself a few questions:
- Is this for one person, a family, or an event?
- How many chapters does the year, trip, or season have?
- Does each chapter have at least one photo and a sentence?
A short, focused story often works well at the smaller end. A longer year in review or a wedding's memories may need more pages.
You can shape all of this with Dee, or by hand in the editor, and change everything before you order. Start with Dee if you would rather be guided through the choices.
How many photos do you need?
There is no single correct number, but a simple working rule helps: plan one to three photos per page. This is a suggestion for planning, not a product feature or promise.
A single strong image is often enough for a cover or an opening spread. Grouping several shots of the same moment from different angles can bring a page to life.
Having few photos is not a problem. A smaller page count with carefully chosen images can give each picture more room and make the magazine feel more deliberate.
What resolution should the photos be?
Sharp printing works best with high-resolution originals. The printed magazine is A4 (A4 (210 × 297 mm)), so small or blurry copies saved from a screen can look weak on the page.
A practical check: photos sent through messaging apps are often compressed. Where you can, use the original file or a copy transferred to a computer. The editor lets you preview how a photo sits on the page before you order.
If a low-resolution photo is your only option, consider using it at a smaller size on the page, where it usually looks better than when it is stretched across a full spread.
How do you balance text and photos?
A good magazine gives photos room to speak, while adding short context around them. A practical balance is a short piece of text on every second page: a date, a place, a memory, or a note.
You might try this rhythm:
- One page with a large photo and a short heading.
- The next page with two or three smaller photos and a paragraph.
- A page with photos only, because sometimes a moment is enough on its own.
You can also add QR codes to pages that play a voice message or a video. Think of these as an extra layer alongside the text rather than a replacement for it. You can see what the editor can do on our features page.
What do example plans look like?
Concrete examples can make planning easier. These are only starting ideas; adjust them to your own story.
A small year in review
One photo and one sentence per month. The page count stays modest, with one page for each month. For a step-by-step approach, see How to Make a Family Year in Review Book, Step by Step.
A birthday or celebration
One large photo for the opening page, followed by smaller moments from the people who were there. Several people can add their own photos and notes with make it together.
An event
Photos guests send through the QR code on each table can fill pages with a few frames each. For this format, see our event magazine page.

FAQ
I have very few photos. Is that okay?
Yes. A small number of photos is not a problem. Keeping the page count low and giving each photo its own page often gives a stronger result.
Can I use low-resolution photos?
Where possible, use high-resolution originals rather than copies saved from a messaging app. The printed size is A4, so small or blurry images can look weak. You can preview how each photo sits on the page in the editor before ordering.
Can I add pages after I order?
You can change the page count and content in the editor before you order. For questions after ordering, contact us at info@dearedition.com.
